Hello. How are you today?
I’m a mixture of excited and also too hot (because of the lovely weather).
At this stage, how closely does your programme blurb match the content of your show?
Luckily I set myself a deadline of a first preview before the end of January so by the time I was writing the blurb the skeleton of the show was already there. It would be really awful if I’d called a show Super Sonic 90s Kid and made the blurb about computer games and then actually written a show in July and panicked and made it about when Judi Dench nearly ran me over or something. That did happen btw in 1998.
Who are you sharing a flat with and how will you help each other survive the month?
Myra Dubois, Yorkshire’s finest songstress who some have said looks suspiciously like writer and performer Gareth Joyner. This will be our third Edinburgh as flatmates and our best ways of getting through the Edinburgh grind are: making stew, doing impressions of Zippy from Rainbow, getting chips at 2am, cheering at dogs we see out of the window, cheering pigeons in flight we see out of the window, playing Mario Kart 64 and performing Les Miserables as Zippy from Rainbow. We usually share a flat with other people but this year nobody wanted to share with us because we are TOO fun or something.
Any shows you’re excited about seeing?
I can’t wait to see what Adam Larter and Luke McQueen have come up with this year, they’re always a right treat. Also reliably brilliant are Eleanor Morton, Athena Kubgblenu and Eleanor Tiernan and I’m really looking forward to the debuts from Sindhu Vee and Stevie Martin. And my brother Luke Kempner if he can squeeze me in coz he always sells out so if you have any sense you’ll come to my show, fans!
Other than the great shows, what else are you looking forward to about your trip to Edinburgh this year?
Flipping Mosque Kitchen innit, can’t wait. And just seeing someone cool to talk to around every corner. Hello, friends!
The Fringe’s tagline this year is ‘Into The Unknown’. What do people not know about you?
I am really really good at Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine on the Mega Drive. I got 4 million points once last year and I screengrabbed it and it’s genuine, I couldn’t fake it coz I’m shit at Photoshop. I think they should make a sequel to King of Kong about me.
I’m bored of all the podcasts I currently subscribe to. Can you recommend me a good one please?
My favourite podcast is Last Podcast on the Left. It’s three friends who meticulously research serial killers and similar and once a week record a show. You get a fascinating insight in to the minds of people like Charles Manson and Ted Bundy but they also do a wonderful job of taking away the power of these terrible people because the biggest surprise of such a bleak basis for a podcast is how funny it is. I genuinely laugh out loud at Last Podcast, it’s proper edutainment.
Here’s a space to write about anything you want. Go for it.
Princess Anne is my favourite royal. I am anti-monarchy because as a concept it sucks, what the hell is this nonsense, but Anne seems really cool. At the Olympics in 1976 she won a silver medal in the eventing riding the Queen’s horse and the horse was a real prick and behaved so badly and Anne fell off and got proper concussion but she went “fuck it, FOR ENGLAND!” and she got back on that bastard horse and finished the event. I wouldn’t have done that. I’d have started pointing at my bonce and crying. Well done, Anne.
