Sleeping Trees are a sketch group who love performing long-form narratives. Previously they’ve tackled cinema and now this year they tell the story of their adventure around the world. What could possible have gone wrong?
Hello. How are you today?
Not too bad thank you! I would ask you how you are but you’re just a list of questions. Actually, I won’t let that stop me, how are you?! Shall we order some drinks?
At this stage, how closely does your programme blurb match the content of your show?
Ha! Well it’s getting there, it’s definitely shaping up to be a narrative sketch show about the three of us travelling the world, we could have been a little more ambiguous with it though! Currently trying to work out how we can include a secret mission in the show… Next year our blurb is going to read; three blokes will be present on stage and they will hopefully make you laugh. Five stars.
Who are you sharing a flat with and how will you help each other survive the month?
It’s just the three of us this year, plus our producer Alice. We’ve always shared with tonnes of people in the past so it should be a welcome change! We all take it in turns cooking for one another, and providing the hangover medicine. It’s our ninth Fringe this year so we’re fairly well practiced in surviving the month, let’s hope we make it to ten.
Any shows you’re excited about seeing?
Really looking forward to seeing the new show from our friends The Pin, we’re previewing with them towards the end of the month, and can’t wait to see Jordan Brookes new one, that fella is gonna be big time soon.
Other than the great shows, what else are you looking forward to about your trip to Edinburgh this year?
I’d be lying if I said we didn’t all look forward to the food in Edinburgh massively! We have accrued so many favourite grazing spots over the years that we have too many to fit in these days! We’re also just looking forward to the lifestyle of it all, it’s the only month of the year where it’s acceptable to go to bed at 5am most nights!
The Fringe’s tagline this year is ‘Into The Unknown’. What do people not know about you?
Really!? I did not know that. That’s extremely apt given the change in approach to this new show! What do people not know about us? I’d like to say they may not know we’re approaching 30 but that may be more than apparent given our increasing waist lines and decreasing hair volume. They also may not know that this is our ninth show at our ninth Fringe, so be sure to check out number 10 next year! That’ll also be ten years since we started the company. Wow I feel old.
I’m bored of all the podcasts I currently subscribe to. Can you recommend me a good one please?
Unfortunately Josh is the podcast man! If only he had elected himself to answer this Q&A. Two I do listen to regularly are Stuart Goldsmith’s Comedian’s Comedian podcast and Richard Herring’s live at Leicester Square podcast; the episode with Brian Blessed is the greatest thing ever recorded.
Here’s a space to write about anything you want. Go for it.
Seeing as I felt that last question was a little wasted on me as I’m more of a music man than a podcast man, I will use this space to write this:
GO AND LISTEN TO HEAVEN AND EARTH BY KAMASI WASHINGTON RIGHT NOW, IT IS HANDS DOWN THE BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR.
Now where are those drinks?
