A very welcome return to the Fringe for this triple Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee.
Hello. How are you today?
Well I am trying to move house in the same week as finishing my Edinburgh show and another big project. I think it is fair to say I am half nuts.
At this stage, how closely does your programme blurb match the content of your show?
I have described my show as being about change, pain, honour and gain – and I think I cover all of those, unequally.
Have the momentous events of 2016 affected your act in any way?
Not really. I have remarks to make about Brexit like all other observers but the thrust of my show is personal. If I can spot resonances between the two levels I will share them – exciting for you!! No? Oh.
Who are you sharing a flat with this festival and how will you help each other survive the month?
Oh it’s just me and my good lady, then the kids come up later in the month so I think the only threat to our survival is toxic airborne viruses released by the Azerbaijanian government who hate our freedoms.
Any shows you’re particularly excited about seeing?
Translunar Paradise at The Pleasance looks amazing.
Other than the great shows, what else are you looking forward to about your trip to Edinburgh this year?
I have been away from standup for a few years so I am looking forward to scraping my own rust off and getting good and limber again by the end. So limber that I can octopus through a heritage grille and steal the crown jewels. If you are anxious about where I put the rust scrapings the answer is the main bin, not recycling.
What celebrity death hit you the hardest in 2016 (mine was Wogan)?
I only realised once he’d gone that one of my core beliefs had been that Bowie would be able to reconfigure himself somehow to cheat death. I loved Prince but he was merely a genius. Bowie’s mysterious Personhood protected us all and I feel his loss most keenly.
Here’s a space to write about anything you want. Go for it.
It cannot be overstated or too often repeated: Trump is the lowest calibre person ever to crawl upon the Earth. Beyond a certain point stupidity is just cowardice. I spit on him.
