Tom Allen: Edinburgh Fringe 2017 interview

Tom Allen seems to have finally found the success his talent deserves, becoming a regular TV name and supporting Sarah Millican on tour.

He’s back at the Fringe with what will undoubtedly be an assured and suave hour of stand-up.

At this stage, how closely does your programme blurb match the content of your show?

Oh pretty closely I think? I try and write about the essence of the show so if a particular subject or specific thing evolves it’s fine!

Have the momentous events of 2016 affected your comedy in any way?

Are we still talking about 2016??

Who are you sharing a flat with this festival and how will you help each other survive the month?

I’m sharing a flat with James Acaster, Stuart Laws, Annie McGrath, Amy Annette, David Trent and Nish Kumar. But this is none of your business.

Any shows you’re particularly excited about seeing?

Yes all of my flat mates. And also Suzi Ruffell’s Keeping It Classy Pleasance Courtyard at 9.45.

Other than the great shows, what else are you looking forward to about your trip to Edinburgh this year?

I like to to to the gym and go swimming every day. So I’m looking forward to that. Seeing people. Maybe some brunch. But life is to be lived in the moment so who knows what will happen in the future.

What celebrity death hit you the hardest in 2016 (mine was Wogan)?

Victoria Wood. She’s always been my comedy hero. I loved her even when I was a small kid. Her passing made me realise how her subtle, detailed and very human observations had brought me closer to the people around me. Her work is something my mum and I always watch together for example. She validated the every day for a lot of people. What an amazing talent.
