Adam Riches: Edinburgh Fringe 2017 interview

Adam Riches is a ferocious talent, with a mad energy that makes his improvised, interactive shows must-sees at the Fringe.

Six years after winning Best Show, he has not let up on any aspect of what makes him such a great performer.

Hello. How are you today?

You know what, I’m doing alright. I am writing and I am thinking and I am rewriting and I am rethinking ad nauseum. But it is good to be constructing another live hour of bullshit again and dealing with all the trials and tribulations that go hand in hand with that. Also, (and perhaps crucially), I got dressed today and that is always a plus. Particularly for my neighbours and local wildlife.

At this stage, how closely does your programme blurb match the content of your show?

Do me a favour and google ‘Worst Identikit Picture Ever’. There’s a Buzzfeed article that pretty much lays out just how far wide of Home Plate I have pitched this particular ball. Pictures 9, 6, 3 and 1 best represent my accuracy.

But to be honest I’ve never really been fully convinced that blurb matters at the brochure stage. What you write on your flyer is important I suppose, it makes sense that that should be close to what you’ve got. But blurb in March? Oh that can go blurb itself, right up the blurb. Blurbways.

Have the momentous events of 2016 affected your act in any way?

Why, what happened? You’ve got me all worried now and googling ‘Momentous Events of 2016’…

Ok. Who are you sharing a flat with this festival and…

Wait, I’ve just clicked on this Atlantic article, ‘Ten Most Significant World Events of 2016’. ‘Columbia Strikes a Peace Deal’. Is that what you mean? Scrolling down…’Brazil and South Korea impeach their Presidents’…’Eastern Aleppo Falls’…Right. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen one of my shows before but just to give you some context, I won an award for having someone spit in my mouth.

Right. So…

So in answer to your question, yes. 2016 will feature and She will feature hard. If only in the word count.

Thanks. Who are you sharing a flat with this festival and how will you help each other survive the month?

I will be on my own, as usual. I lead a very dull and turgid existence during the Fringe. I eat, I swim, I go to the cinema, I perform and then I go to bed. I don’t even get to see too many other shows whilst I’m up there either. I find I just need to step away from the noise to keep myself sane.

Any shows you’re particularly excited about seeing?

Adam Riches & John Kearns as Michael Ball & Alfie Boe in ‘Ball and Boe – For One Night Only’ – Live at the Pleasance Grand. I think we’re all looking forward to that aren’t we?

Other than the great shows, what else are you looking forward to about your trip to Edinburgh this year?

The start of the new football season and my holiday as soon as I get back. The Fringe is long and hard and dominates the year up until it starts. So once it has, it’s all about everything else.

What celebrity death hit you the hardest in 2016 (mine was Wogan)?

Hit me hard is probably the wrong phrase. Family members and friends hit hard and I’m at that age now where most of my heroes or influences are inevitably going to start drifting away. But in terms of people who went too soon, who I wanted much much more from…Victoria Wood, Alan Rickman, Carrie Fisher, Garry Shandling, Prince. Gene Wilder too. All have had effects on me ranging from the wholly influential to downright pure joy.

Here’s a space to write about anything you want. Go for it.

You think I’ve got time for this? With everything that went on last year in Brazil and South Korea?
