Maybe the most intriguing show at the Fringe, the blurb promises a sketch show about sketch shows and Wario from Mario.
It features notorious comedy roasters Matt Winning and Stuart Laws, as well as Anne Klein from Luxembourg, who all answer our questions.
Hello. How are you today?
Anne: There are three of us, mostly just trying to keep to the shadows to stay cool.
Stuart: I am…
Matt: …we’re fine.
Are you ready for another month of Edinburgh Fringe action?
S: This is our first time up there so we don’t know what to expect. Aside from a Five Guys Best Newcomer show nomination.
A: I’m from Luxembourg.
M: This is actually my 17th year going up and so you could say I was born ready. If I was born at the age of 13. When I started coming up here.
At this stage, how closely does your programme blurb match the content of your show?
A: It’s exactly the same except the third person is now in the show, when they weren’t before.
S: The third person was Anne. She was stuck in Luxembourg before.
M: I haven’t read the blurb, I let Stuart do that because I was focussed on writing really great sketches that are mainly clever but a bit funny.
S: Basically it’s a sketch show where every sketch ends with the same punchline: I Am Wario!
A: I love that!
M: That’s not true. That better not be true.
What are your tips for getting people to see your show?
S: Free burgers for everyone.
A: Yes, Free burgers for anyone. Simply come to our show and then walk into any burger selling establishment, look the server in the eye and yell I AM WARIO. They’ll do the rest.
M: For me it’s all about being smart, people flock to clever people and shows. We also spent £10k on PR.
Who are you sharing a flat with this festival and how will you help each other survive the month?
S: We’re sharing with a mysterious Italian guy, quite broad shoulders.
A: Always standing around in the shadows.
M: I’m living alone, in a yurt that I’ve pitched to various TV production companies.
Any shows you’re particularly excited about seeing?
S: Jason Bourne
A: Any Luxembourg films
M: Anything that tickles my clever bone.
Other than the great shows, what else are you looking forward to about your trip to Edinburgh this year?
S: Five Guys everyday. Be nice to see what it’s like in Scotland.
A: Be good to spend some time thinking about my ex-family.
M: Weird phrasing by Anne.
Salt and sauce on your chips?
S: Cajun spice more like.
A: Serve it in a cup more like.
M: Can we talk about my art?
Here’s a space to write about anything you want. Go for it.
M: My art is best encapsulated by…
A: The extensive use of shadows.
S: I step out of the shadows and, for this whole interview I have been Wario
M: What the hell?
I Am Wario
