Tom Toal: Edinburgh Fringe 2016 interview

After a frustrating 2015, Tom Toal is determined to enjoy this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

At this stage, how closely does your programme blurb match the content of your show?

It’s exactly the same. I actually stuck to a theme this year, I know I’m proud of me too

What are your tips for getting people to see your show?

If you like someone putting it all out there and performing like it’s their last ever show(read the blurb to get that reference) then defo come along, and stories involving blazing squad members

Who are you sharing a flat with this festival and how will you help each other survive the
month?

My wife and 2 year old daughter. I help her survive by making sure she has eaten everyday. She makes me survive by making me realise that none of it is as important as she is.

Any shows you’re particularly excited about seeing?

Previewed with Joe Wells recently and I think his show could be very important given the times we are living in.

Also looking forward to seeing Richard Gadd, Sean Mcloughlin, Matt Ewins and Phil Ellis

Other than the great shows, what else are you looking forward to about your trip to Edinburgh this year?

I actually am fond of the drive, beautiful scenery in that there Scotland.

Salt and sauce on your chips?

No it ruins the poker evening I’ve set up

Here’s a space to write about anything you want. Go for it.

I didn’t enjoy Edinburgh last year, I have been performing there every year since 2010, last year was the first time I had a bad time.

I made a vow to enjoy 2016’s and so I’ve written a show that is silly, warm and funny with a smattering of urgency and pathos.

It is a departure from I’ve done before and potential could be the best thing I’ve ever done, so please come and see me and let me know if it’s brave or stupid or both.
