What’s new with the newcomers?

It’s a new year and so far all we’ve been doing is listening to Gary Numan in New Cross and reading books by Isaac Newton in the nude.

But there are other new things too. Like new(ish) comedians, including the six who were nominated for the Best Newcomer award at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2014.

Five of those nominees, including the winner Alex Edelman, are putting on their shows at the Soho Theatre in London over the next few weeks as part of a special newcomer season. We spoke to them all ahead of time to get their answers as to what’s new.

Alex Edelman

What big new thing did you discover/learn in 2014?

That we, as humans, have been eating bananas wrong this whole time. Although that doesn’t mean I’ve changed my methods for eating bananas.

What other new act do you think is great?

There are a million, but there’s a New York guy named Nick Callas who I think is pretty great. He’s super funny and his on-stage energy is so engaging. Also, I’d feel remiss if I didn’t mention Dan Schreiber and Rhys James and Steen Raskopolous. All brilliant acts.

What new thing would you like to do in 2015?

I’d like to give this sobriety thing a try. I hear a lot about it. I know a few people who have started not drinking and even though they’re generally unbearable there are a few good guys. So I might give that a go.

What is your New Year’s resolution?

I hate New Year’s resolutions. I’ve resolved to start spending more time with yo momma. How’s that for a resolution.

Gein’s Family Giftshop

What big new thing did you discover/learn in 2014?

We discovered that other people think jizz and bumholes are funny and that Jim cannot do that thing where you run up a wall and do a flip off it. He will keep trying though.

What other new act do you think is great?

Goose. We love Goose, their show last year was incredibly dense with jokes and wonderfully fast paced, it was stunningly good and we demand you go and watch them. Kath loves them because the one on stage is ginger and Kiri likes them because they have one you don’t see too.

What new thing would you like to do in 2015?

Write and perform a good Edinburgh show or stop the raging blood lust that causes the group blackouts every month, not decided yet.

What is your New Year’s resolution?

We would like to find out where Ed goes at 10pm every night, whereas Ed would like to stop us from finding out where he goes at 10pm every night. It’s sort of like the modern day Tom and Jerry.

Gein’s Family Giftshop perform their show Volume 1 at Soho Theatre from Jan 13-17

Lucy Beaumont

What big new thing did you discover/learn in 2014?

I learnt that apparently, according to a scientist I met, we use all of our brain, all of the time. Can you believe it, none of this 10 per cent stuff- all of it. All of our brain.

What other new act do you think is great?

There’s just too many to name, I’d say look out for Peter Brush he’s great.

What new thing would you like to do in 2015?

I’d like to drive, without my mother finding out as she said the worry will kill her.

What is your New Year’s resolution?

Never made one, I don’t think I ever will. I’d like to stop using Bleach as a domestic cleaning product.

Lucy Beaumont performs her show We Can Twerk It Out at Soho Theatre from Jan 19-21

Lazy Susan

What big new thing did you discover / learn in 2015?

Well it’s an obvious one but gig more and preview stuff. Before we went up to Edinburgh last year we did very few previews – only one of which was the actual show we performed – and this was a fairly stressful experience, particularly as we were so heavy on props and tech. I think in stand-up there is an assumption that you should gig all the time and that’s not really the case with sketch, but you need the practice just as much.

What other new act do you think is great?

Well these lasses aren’t exactly new but Natasia Demetriou and Lou Sanders both had inspirational Edinburgh shows. Katia Kvinge and Emma Sidi are new and they knock our socks off. Also Folie a Deux (brilliant new improv duo).

What new thing would you like to do in 2015?

Learn to be more economical. We’re always the ones with an overly-complicated tech script and a big bag of props which we run around frantically collecting at the end of a set. It’d be good to make less go further.

What is your New Year’s Resolution?

Learn instruments – Freya Clarinet / Ukelele, Celeste piano – which can then be burdensomely carried to all subsequent gigs…

Lazy Susan perform their show Extreme Humans at Soho Theatre Jan 22-24

Dane Baptiste

What big new thing did you discover/learn in 2014?

That with enough work; a great manager, some great associates and a loan from baffled but supportive parent – you can put on a show and get a nomination.

What other new act do you think is great?

I can’t name one; everyone continuing to represent diversity and originality. And of course, everyone who thinks I’m great too…

What new thing would you like to do in 2015?

Raise my comedy profile and credibility with some great gigs alongside a few TV and radio appearances.

What is your New Year’s resolution?

See Question 3. Plus get into shape. I don’t have to quit smoking, my mum knows I don’t do that!

Dane Baptiste performs his show Citizen Dane at Soho Theatre Jan 26-31
