Edinburgh Fringe 2014 interview: Natasia Demetriou

As one quarter of the much-acclaimed Oyster Eyes Natasia honed her skills in surreal character comedy.

Now she’s going solo at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, but we’re expecting similar weirdness and brilliance.

Hallo Natasia. How are you today?

Its 1:38pm on a Monday night and I am sat in silence and alone in a room with two single beds and no cupboards. But it does have a giant foosball table right in the middle of the room that I have smacked into 15 times. I have nothing on apart from my knickers and a giant gold Genie hat on my head. So I would say I have never been better.

Oyster Eyes remain one of my favourite ever Fringe acts. Is it strange to be up without the guys this year?

That is very lovely of you to say. And yes. Its horrible. I love those stupid idiots with all my heart. They are like my weird cousin/husbands. If they were here we would probably be crying and in massive moods with each other and it would be so lovely. They are the best ones. I wish they were here.

How have you prepared for your first solo show?

I watched both series of Orange is the new Black and realised how much I want to go to prison. I think I could do very well in prison. And I definitely think it would be less miserable and confusing than trying to write a solo show. Just having so many rules and structure. Yes please.

What kind of characters can we expect to meet?

Who knows?! It is Monday now and my first show is on Thursday and I still don’t know. I am very intrigued to see what I do. After the rehearsal I just did in my pants, you definitely won’t be meeting a Genie.

What else are you looking forward to in Edinburgh this year?

Having some jacket potatoes, having a nice breakfast one day with my flat mates, I can’t wait for my brother to come up because I miss him already. Mainly just seeing my very very talented and funny friends do their excellent shows that you should all go and see. Guys and Gals like Ellie White, Mae Martin, Sheeps, Oscar Jenkyn Jones, Twins, Kieran Hodgson, Birthday Girls, Nick Coyle, Nick Mohammed, Patrick Turpin. So many great pals! So many great talents! Also me and Ellie are doing Acrobatics* in the Invisible Dot Circus and I mean, it’s a worry. But it is also the stupidest fun I have ever had. (*I am crushing / lying on top of Ellie in various different positions)

Here’s a space to write about anything you want. Go for it.

Did you know that a slug has four noses?

Also if you do come to my show please laugh. Even if it’s fake.
