Edinburgh Fringe 2014 interview: Mat Ewins

Mat Ewins’ Fringe show this year is a thrilling story of international adventure.

He also seems confused by a couple of our questions.

Mat Ewins

Hallo Mat. How are you today?

What?

What can we expect from the Six Million Dollar Ewins?

In 1978 my late uncle was a stuntman on the pilot of the Six Million Dollar Man, this show looks at all the things you could buy for six million dollars today. For instance six boats, cars or horses if each of those items cost one million dollars. At the end I contrive an anecdote that broadly touches on everything I mentioned in the proceeding fifty minutes while a picture of Parsons Shame (who played Steven Austen in the pilot) morphs into the face Derek “Derek” Trundle (former CEO of Fox News) and it transpires the whole show was a comment on how inequality is portrayed in the media.

You claim to specialise in “well-produced bullshit”. Can you elaborate?

My director (Quentin Flops of Factor Theatre) and I have always tried to push the envelope with stunts that people look at and go “ok, I don’t know what I’m seeing”. I don’t want to ruin some of the surprises this year but let’s just say anyone with a severe phobia of wasps are advised to avoid my ‘doing an impression of a wasp’ routine, my ‘buzzing along to the Coronation Street theme’ routine, and my ‘lobbing jam and wasps at the audience’ routine.

We’re big fans of your poster. How did you decide the design?

I’ve collaborated with long time photographer/poster designer Spurt Wedlock for the past ten years and he’s always done a fantastic job of taking all my random thoughts and ideas about the design and in no way translating that to the finished article. The brief for the poster this year was supposed to be me crying on to some money but my tears are actually money and my head and eyes and body are also just money to the extent that the flyer would be legal tender.

What else are you looking forward to in Edinburgh this year?

I implore everyone to catch Fox Mosely’s show at the Pizza Free Fringe where he talks about tracking down the lingerie models he used to see in clothing catalogues during his formative years as a teenager in Fox Mosely: Wanks For The Memories (3:15pm, Phones 4U: Space 3, Princes Street, Venue 197, Pizza Free Fringe)

Here’s a space to write about anything you want. Go for it:

What is this.
